DIY Toddler Trail Mix

  If you know a toddler or two then you are probably familiar with the quintessential toddler 'come down', also known in adult land as 'hangry'. Toddlers are emotional creatures, if they are even slightly provoked with the notion that sleep or food might be scares then you might find yourself questioning,"Is this what hell really feels like?"

 To avoid situations that you have to question where your own existence is at, I offer you this. A valuable piece of advice I offer anyone working with toddlers, be prepared. Granted, this is a vast statement and there are a multitude of ways to hardness your preparation for toddler hood, however food prep takes the cake.

 So let's break it down. What is something that is easy to prepare, portable, won't melt or expire quickly and has a versatile offering of different flavors and textures. The one item my brain kept circling around was TRAIL MIX. Yep, good old fashion trail mix. If you know me, then you know I'm going to put  little health spin on this calorie dense and sometimes not so healthy grab n go snack. There's fruits AND veggies in this mix, shhhhhh don't say a word. I wanted to keep it as traditional as possible while adding more value to the mix itself. This is what I came up with.


Ingredients:



Other fun options to mix in or substitute:

  • Protein: cashews, almonds, pistacchio, dried edamame, roasted chickpeas.

  • Instead of cereal try: granola, goldfish or Annies crackers

  • Fruit: freeze dried blueberries, dried cranberries, yogurt covered raisins.   


Ideal places to keep your Toddler Trail Mix:

  • In a backpack/diaper bag, vehicles, gym cubby, stroller, work desk, grandparents house.
